What you eat can influence eye health, but the connection goes far beyond carrots and vitamin A.
The eyes, particularly the retina, are metabolically demanding tissues. The retina requires continuous energy production to maintain photoreceptor function, neuronal signalling and visual processing. At the same time, its dense microvascular network makes it vulnerable to disturbances in glucose metabolism, blood pressure and lipid metabolism.

A diet that provides adequate protein, essential fatty acids, carotenoids, vitamins and minerals can support retinal structure and antioxidant defence. At the same time, maintaining healthy glucose regulation is important for reducing the metabolic and vascular stress associated with diabetic eye disease.
Why metabolic health matters for your eyes
One of the clearest examples of the relationship between metabolism and vision is diabetic retinopathy.
Chronic hyperglycaemia damages the small blood vessels supplying the retina. Over time, metabolic disturbances associated with sustained elevated glucose, including glycation, oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, can impair the retinal microvasculature.
The American Diabetes Association identifies chronic hyperglycaemia as a major risk factor for diabetic retinopathy and recommends optimising glycaemic, blood-pressure and lipid control to reduce the risk or slow its progression. Large prospective trials have demonstrated that improving glycaemic control can prevent or delay diabetic retinopathy.

1. Lutein and zeaxanthin: nutrients concentrated in the macula
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids that selectively accumulate in the retina, particularly within the macula. They contribute to macular pigment and have antioxidant properties. They also absorb portions of high-energy visible light.
The richest dietary sources include dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale, along with egg yolks and several other vegetables. Research has consistently identified lutein and zeaxanthin as important dietary components for ocular health.
The distinction between dietary intake and supplementation is important.
A clinical trial found that lutein plus zeaxanthin did not provide an additional overall reduction in advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) when added to the full AREDS formulation. However, participants with the lowest dietary intake of these carotenoids appeared to benefit more, and the lutein/zeaxanthin formulation was particularly relevant as an alternative to beta-carotene.
This supports a practical principle: regularly eating lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich foods is sensible, while high-dose supplementation should be reserved for appropriate clinical situations.
2. Omega-3 fatty acids and retinal structure
The retina contains substantial amounts of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is an important structural component of photoreceptor cell membranes and contributes to normal retinal function.
Fatty fish such as sardines, salmon, mackerel and other oily fish provide preformed EPA and DHA.
However, evidence should not be overstated. AREDS2 specifically tested omega-3 supplementation in people with intermediate AMD and found that adding omega-3 fatty acids to the AREDS formulation did not produce an additional overall reduction in progression to advanced AMD.
That does not make fatty fish irrelevant to eye health. It means that omega-3 supplementation should not be presented as a proven treatment for preventing AMD.
3. Vitamin A and retinal function
Vitamin A has a fundamental role in vision. Retinal photoreceptors use vitamin-A-derived molecules in the visual cycle that allows the eye to detect light.
Animal foods such as eggs and liver provide preformed vitamin A, while some plant foods contain carotenoids such as beta-carotene that the body can convert into vitamin A.
Severe vitamin A deficiency can impair vision and cause xerophthalmia. However, more vitamin A is not necessarily better. Excessive preformed vitamin A can be toxic, which is another reason that obtaining nutrients through a varied diet is generally preferable to indiscriminate supplementation.
4. Zinc: a small mineral with important retinal functions
Zinc is involved in numerous enzymes and cellular processes in the eye, including pathways associated with retinal metabolism and vitamin A utilisation.
Meat, shellfish, eggs and other nutrient-dense foods can contribute dietary zinc.
Zinc also has a specific clinical role in the AREDS/AREDS2 formulations used for people with particular stages of AMD. These high-dose formulations are therapeutic interventions, not ordinary multivitamins, and should not be interpreted as a recommendation for everyone to take high-dose zinc.

A diet dominated by refined carbohydrates and added sugars can make glucose regulation more difficult, particularly in people who already have impaired insulin sensitivity. A 2023 review examining diet in diabetic retinopathy, AMD and cataracts similarly highlighted dietary patterns containing vegetables, leafy greens, fish, nuts, eggs and other nutrient-dense foods as potentially beneficial for eye health, while recognising that nutrition is only one component of disease prevention and management.
Eye health is not only about food
Nutrition cannot replace regular eye examinations, smoking cessation, physical activity or appropriate management of diabetes, blood pressure and lipids.
The National Eye Institute recommends a healthy diet containing dark leafy greens and omega-3-rich fish, alongside physical activity and management of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure that can increase the risk of vision problems.
For people with diabetes, regular retinal screening is particularly important because diabetic retinopathy can progress before significant vision changes become noticeable. Current ADA guidance recommends appropriate eye screening and optimisation of glycaemic, blood-pressure and lipid management.

The best foods for eye health are not a collection of isolated “superfoods.”
Eye health sits at the intersection of retinal nutrition and metabolic health.
